Amazon is launching a service that will enable couriers to enter the homes of customers and leave deliveries inside. The Amazon Key will enable customers to use a combination of a smartphone app, smart lock, and Amazon Cloud Cam to give couriers access to their homes. Amazon Key aims to encourage people to order from the site even if they have a busy lifestyle which means they can’t always be home to answer the door to collect a delivery.

Amazon Key will officially launch on the 8th November in 37 cities in the United States. This will enable their customers to order anything they want and feel safe in the knowledge that they can return home to their packages without the threat of theft, bad weather, or the “sorry we missed you” note.

On the day of a delivery, the customer will receive an email notifying them that their order is going to arrive. Once the delivery is authorised and the request for the courier to enter the home is authenticated, the camera starts recording the delivery and the door is unlocked. Customers can track the location of their parcel and can watch the delivery live or they can view it later. Once the delivery has been made, another email will be sent to the customer letting them know that their door has been relocked. The Amazon Key delivery process is back up by the Amazon Happiness Guarantee. However, there are still many people who have concerns about letting delivery personnel into their homes despite security measures.
