Since the owner of three petrol stations in the West Midlands cut their petrol price to less than £1 per liter, supermarkets have had to respond after the owner claimed supermarkets to be cheating drivers with the prices they charge for petrol.

Harvest Energy Garages made the decision to sell their petrol at 99.7p was the first time, which saw £1 a liter petrol pumps for the first time in more than 5 years. The owner Dr Velautham Sarveswaran spoke about his decision to do it, he claimed he will still make money despite the price drop, but didn’t hesitate to speak out on the topic of supermarket petrol prices. 

Unleaded petrol costs hit a five-year low last week with the figure coming to £109.8 while diesel was just below £1.15p a litre.

Following this, Tesco was the first major supermarket to confirm they would make further reductions to their prices by lowering their prices by 2p on both petrol and diesel, which took affect on Monday afternoon. Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s have joined the price war, stating they will make similar reductions starting from Tuesday.

 Is this a drop in petrol costs that will continue to have a knock-on affect in the future or simply an effective stunt performed by Harvest in order to gain publicity before petrol prices begin to climb again? Only time will tell!
