Despite being given with the best of intentions there’s bound to be that one gift that for whatever reason you don’t want. The good news is you may still be able to shift this in one way or another. So, can you return your gift and if so how do you return it?
Before we explain how to return items we need to mention what cannot be returned.
ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED:
- Perishable items such as food.
- Personalised items such as a keychain.
- CDs, DVDs and computer software.
Returning a gift in store:
Many retailers offer an extension of their general return policies following the festive period. In most cases, you will need proof of purchase to return a gift such as a receipt.
However, this doesn’t automatically mean that a seller will return your money or arrange an exchange. If a product is not broken or faulty some businesses do not accept returns. Don’t’ feel disappointed straight away though as some shops have a “good will” policy. This means they will happily accept items that you are unhappy with. Return periods differ so it is best to check out terms individually.
Returning a gift purchased online:
Returning a gift online could prove to be a bit trickier. You may need to ask the person who purchased it for you to provide more specific information. This is definitely bittersweet but what good is that unwanted jumper doing at the back of your wardrobe?
Regifting or donating to charity:
Another option you can consider is regifting or donating your unwanted present. These are probably the most guilt-free ways of passing items on. If you don’t want a particular item someone else will. Remember when regifting to not make the mistake of sending the gift to the person who gave it to you in the first place!
