Learner drivers will no longer have to wait until passing their test to practice motorway driving. Learner drivers will no longer have to wait until passing their test to drive on motorways. The change in law is hoped to give new drivers more confidence before their first motorway encounter.
Learner drivers will be taking to the motorways as part of their training. New legislation means drivers without a full license will be able to drive on the motorway during a lesson with an official instructor.
Motorway driving lessons will only be conducted when the instructor believes that the student can handle it. The new rules only apply to those who are learning to drive a car; motorcyclists will not be able to ride on motorways.
Our tips:
- When joining the motorway, be sure to match the speed of other cars while on the slip road.
- Watch out for other drivers and try to anticipate what they will do. If you do this, you are less likely to become flustered when they make an indication to you.
- Ask your instructor to tell you your route before getting of the motorway.
- Larger road users may attempt to overtake you as most will not want to lose speed by driving behind a learner. Make sure you are prepared for this.
