Electric cars offer a much more eco-friendly way to travel in terms of reducing carbon emissions and the amount of fossil fuels we are burning; however due to the relatively short battery life the cars have and the lack of available charging stations, many people find electric vehicles to be out of the question. However Goodyear has recently revealed a new concept that could change the world of motoring forever!
With an incredible new concept tyre – named the ‘BH023’ for now, Goodyear unveiled the tyre, which converts heat into electronic energy.
While there are no immediate plans to release the tyre any time soon, Goodyear proposed that cars of the future could be using the tyres to keep their batteries topped up and their wheels in motion!
How it Works
So, how does this incredible and innovative new tyre work?
Well, it’s all to do with heat. The tyre collects and converts heat generated from sunlight hitting the tyres when the car is stationary as well as the large amount of heat generated from the friction between the tyre and road when the car is in motion. The heat is then converted to electricity and stored in the car’s battery.
With an ‘ultra-black’ surface, the tyre will be able to capture as much heat as possible from the sun.
‘This tyre generates electricity through the action of materials in the tyre that capture and transform the energy created by heat when it flexes as it rolls during normal driving conditions,’ explained Goodyear.
‘The materials used would optimise the tyre’s electricity generation capabilities as well as its rolling resistance.
‘As demand for electric cars grows, this technology has the potential to significantly contribute to the solution of future mobility challenges.
Will Goodyear’s groundbreaking concept technology be a prominent feature of the electronic cars of the future? Only time will tell!
