Recently, a motorcyclist has been caught using a James Bond style licence plate to conceal his real licence plate from the police. The culprit orchestrated this all to avoid receiving a speeding fine.

Traffic police in Spain discovered the modified license plate fitted to the bike of a Swiss national had the ability to flip up at the press of a button in order to conceal it from police and traffic cameras. The is seen on Sean Connery’s Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger which showed the agent quickly switching his plate to reveal another. Despite the cyclist’s attempts, he was still caught!

What if this happened in the UK?

More and more cameras are being installed to monitor our roads every year. High-quality speeding cameras typically catch any tricks. These cameras would be able to pick up the switch between licenses and alert the police straight away. This year has seen many changes implemented to the way our roads operate. This includes an increase in fines that could be given to those caught speeding. The crackdown on drivers breaking the speeding limit has seen the maximum possible penalty jump from the current £1,000 to £2,500. Currently, in the UK the minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three penalty points added to your driving licence while the maximum fine is £1,000 or £2,500 for motorway offences. If you are caught going between 31 and 40mph in a 30mph zone you will get three penalty points and a fine of between 25% and 75% of your weekly income.
